John B. Gates has been
Chairman of the Board of InterContinental
Hotels Corporation from 1959 to 1971.
Mr. Gates joined
Pan American World Airways in
1957, and was elected a Director of Pan Am
Airlines in January, 1967. He had previously
been treasurer of Russell, Burdsall & Ward Bolt
& Nut Company, Port Chester, N.Y., and remained
a member of the Board of Directors.
During World War II, he served as chief counsel
of the Iron and Steel Branch of the Office of
Price Administration in Washington. In the
Korean War, he was a consultant for the Office
of Price Stabilization.
Mr. Gates was graduated from Yale in 1931 and
from Yale Law School in 1934. He was admitted
to the New York Bar in 1936 and was associated
with the law firm of Reynolds, Richards &
McCutcheon, New York from 1934 to 1941.
Long active in Yale alumni affairs, Mr. Gates
was the chairman of the Yale University Alumni
Fund and was a member of the Yale Development
Board of Directors of the Yale Alumni Fund, and
Associate Fellow of Saybrook College.
Mr. Gates was born in St. Albans, Vt., and was
graduated from Taft School before matriculating
at Yale. He resided in Greenwich, Conn., and
was married to the former Mildred Davis. They
had a son, John, and a daughter, Mrs. Douglas
Crocker.
